Ten tips for successful breastfeeding

Greetings from VARDAAN.

It is every mother’s dream to give best nutrition to her baby to ensure optimum growth and development. In current time of surfeit information available all over, sometimes it is difficult to get essential and authentic information. Here we provide you the excellent tips for young moms so that breast feeding becomes an enjoyable experience for the duo.

  • Prepare yourself physically and mentally during pregnancy itself for providing exclusive breastfeeding to your baby. Self-examination of breasts should be done to ensure proper nipple formation so that feeding on breast is easy for your little one.
  • A healthy and balanced diet should be taken throughout pregnancy as well as during lactation to ensure optimum milk supply. Each meal of yours should contain adequate amount of good quality protein, essential fatty acids, and micronutrients.
  • Diet should be as fresh and minimally processed as possible. Vegetables, fruits, dry fruits should be part of almost all meals to provide all micronutrients.
  •  Mother must take good quantity of fluids during lactation to ensure proper supply of milk.
  • Initiate breast feeding as early as possible after birthing. Sooner the initiation, easier is the process of lactation establishment
  • During breast feeding, whichever position you adopt, basic principle to be taken care-Bring baby to breast, not breast to baby.
  • During initial 2-3 days, milk produced is pale yellow, thin fluid, less in quantity which is called colostrum. It must be fed to child as it gives him/her best immunity for major and minor diseases.
  • During breast feeding, proper latching should be ensured. Latching means- baby should suck on nipple and areola (brown part around nipple) .
  •  Successful Breast-feeding needs patient learning of process for mother as well as baby. Hence being relaxed and patient in first 2 days goes long way.
  • Feeding time should be the quality time during which mother should talk, caress, and understand the cues by baby so that this becomes a beautiful and happy experience for both

Hope that these tips will be useful to new moms. Happy breast feeding.
